How to Clean the Brother LC406 Print Head

For Brother MFC-J4335DW and MFC-J4345DW XL printers:

INK → PRINT HEAD CLEANING

Use the navigation arrows and OK button to select the options.

For Brother MFC-J4535DW and MFC-J4535DW XL printers:

INK → PRINT HEAD CLEANING

Use the touchscreen to select the options.

For MFC-J5855DW, MFC-J5955DW, MFC-J6555DW and MFC-J6955DW printers:

On the touchscreen, open the Ink menu and select Print Head Cleaning.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Make sure the printer is turned on.
  2. Open the Ink menu.
  3. Select Print Head Cleaning.
  4. Choose Black only, Color only or All.
  5. Select Normal, Strong or Strongest.
  6. Always start with Normal.
  7. Press Start or confirm using the appropriate button.
  8. Wait until cleaning is complete.
  9. Print a Print Quality Check Sheet.
  10. Examine the black, cyan, magenta and yellow blocks.

Expected result: all four colour blocks should display complete lines without white gaps.

How to Print a Quality Check Sheet

MFC-J4335DW and MFC-J4345DW XL:

INK → IMPR. PRINTQUALITY → IMPR. PRINTQUALITY

MFC-J4535DW and MFC-J4535DW XL:

INK → IMPROVE PRINT QUALITY → CHECK PRINT QUALITY

For other compatible models, locate the print quality check function in the maintenance menu.

  1. Open the print quality check function.
  2. Confirm printing of the Print Quality Check Sheet.
  3. Examine the four colour blocks.
  4. If all lines are complete, no additional cleaning is required.
  5. If lines are missing, follow the printer instructions.
  6. Select the pattern that best matches the printed result when prompted.
  7. Perform the recommended cleaning procedure.
  8. Print another quality check sheet.

Tip: this test helps identify whether the problem affects black, cyan, magenta or yellow.

Special Cleaning: Use Only When Necessary

If several normal cleaning cycles have not improved print quality, some Brother printers provide a special cleaning procedure.

MFC-J4335DW and MFC-J4345DW XL:

  1. Press Ink.
  2. Select Print Head Cleaning.
  3. Press Settings and OK simultaneously.
  4. The printer starts special cleaning.

MFC-J4535DW:

  1. Open Ink → Print Head Cleaning.
  2. Press and hold the cleaning icon indicated on the touchscreen for five seconds.
  3. Wait until special cleaning is complete.

Warning: special cleaning consumes a large amount of ink. Use it only after several normal cleaning cycles have failed. For other models, consult the model-specific procedure before starting special cleaning.

LC406 – Standard Yield:

How to Fix Blurry or Misaligned Printing

Print Head Alignment

MFC-J4335DW and MFC-J4345DW XL:

INK → IMPR. PRINTQUALITY → ALIGNMENT

MFC-J4535DW and MFC-J4535DW XL:

INK → IMPROVE PRINT QUALITY → ALIGNMENT

For other compatible models, locate the Alignment function in the maintenance menu.

  1. Complete a print quality check first.
  2. Open the Alignment function.
  3. Select the options offered by your printer.

  5. Follow the instructions displayed on the printer.

What If Cleaning Does Not Work?

  • Check the ink levels.
