How to Clean the Brother LC-406XL Print Head

Brother printers using LC-406XL ink cartridges have a built-in print head cleaning function. Use this function when horizontal lines, blank spaces or missing colours appear on printed pages.

  2. Select Print Head Cleaning.
  3. Press OK.
  4. Select Black only, Color only or All.
  5. Press OK.
  6. Select Normal, Strong or Strongest.
  7. Press OK.
  8. Confirm the cleaning operation.
  9. Wait until cleaning is complete.
  10. Print a quality check sheet.

Touchscreen Models

Examine the black, cyan, magenta and yellow blocks. All lines should be complete and uniform.

  1. If all lines are visible, no additional cleaning is required.
  2. If lines are missing, indicate that there is a print quality problem.
  3. Select the pattern that most closely matches the printed result when prompted.
  4. The machine determines whether print head cleaning is required.
  5. Start the cleaning procedure.
  6. Print another quality check sheet.
  7. Compare the results.
