What Is the Difference Between the DR-630 Drum and Toner?

The DR-630 is the imaging drum. It creates and transfers the image that will be printed onto the paper.

The toner cartridge contains the black toner powder used to produce text and images. The drum and toner work together but are two separate consumable components.

Your printer may therefore request a new DR-630 drum even when your TN-630 or TN-660 toner cartridge still contains toner. After drum replacement, the drum counter generally needs to be reset.

How to Reset the Brother DR-630 Drum

After replacing your Brother DR-630 drum unit, you will need to reset the drum counter so the printer correctly recognizes the new drum unit.

The reset procedure varies depending on the display and control panel of your Brother machine. Choose the method below that corresponds to your printer.

Option 1: Brother MFC Printers With a Touchscreen

This procedure applies to certain Brother MFC touchscreen models using the DR-630 drum, such as the MFC-L2740DW.

Make sure the front cover is closed and the printer is displaying the Home screen.
Press and hold the Cancel (X) button or corresponding icon for approximately 5 seconds.
Access the menu displaying the supplies / toner information.
Select Drum, then confirm the drum counter reset by pressing Yes.

The DR-630 drum counter should now be reset.

Option 2: Brother MFC or DCP Printers With a Display and Buttons

This procedure applies to several Brother machines using the DR-630 drum, including the MFC-L2700DW and DCP-L2520DW.

Open the front cover of the printer.
Press and hold the OK button for approximately 2 seconds.
The display should show “Replace Drum?”.
Confirm the drum counter reset:
- for MFC models, press 1;
- for DCP models, press the Up Arrow (▲).
Once the reset has been confirmed, close the front cover.

The DR-630 drum counter should now be reset.

Option 3: Brother HL Printers

This procedure applies to several Brother HL printers using the DR-630 drum, including the HL-L2300D, HL-L2320D, HL-L2340DW and HL-L2360DW.

Open the front cover.
Press and hold the OK button for approximately 2 seconds.
Depending on the model, the display may show Drum or the Drum indicator light may begin flashing.
Press the Up Arrow (▲) or the Go button, depending on the model, to confirm the drum counter reset.
Close the front cover.

The DR-630 drum counter should now be reset.

Maintenance Tip: Clean the Corona Wire

Before closing the front cover, take a moment to clean the corona wire on the drum unit. This simple maintenance step can help maintain good print quality.

Locate the green tab on the drum unit.
Gently slide the tab from side to side several times.
Return the tab to its original position.

Important: make sure the marks or arrows are properly aligned when returning the green tab to its original position. This can help prevent print-quality problems.

Does the “Replace Drum” Message Still Appear?

If the Drum light or “Replace Drum” message remains displayed after completing the procedure, make sure the DR-630 drum unit is properly installed, then repeat the reset procedure for your printer model.

Important: resetting the drum counter does not repair a worn or defective drum unit. The counter should normally be reset when installing a new drum unit.
