How to Clean the Brother LC71 and LC75 Print Head

Brother printers using LC71 and LC75 ink cartridges have a built-in print head cleaning function.

Button-Controlled Printers

MENU → INK → CLEANING
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Press Menu.
  3. Use the navigation arrows to select Ink or Ink Management.
  4. Press OK.
  5. Select Cleaning.
  6. Press OK.
  7. Choose Black, Color or All, depending on the available options.
  8. Confirm the cleaning operation.
  9. Wait until the cleaning cycle is complete.
  10. Print a quality check sheet.

Touchscreen Printers

INK → CLEANING
  1. Press the Ink icon.
  2. Select Cleaning.
  3. Choose the affected colour group.
  4. Confirm if prompted.
  5. Wait until cleaning is complete.

Important: start by cleaning only the affected colour group. Print head cleaning consumes ink.

How to Interpret the Check Sheet

The sheet displays four colour blocks: black, cyan, magenta and yellow.

Each block should display complete lines without white gaps.

If Lines Are Missing

  1. Examine all four colour blocks.
  2. When the printer asks whether print quality is acceptable, select No if lines are missing.
  3. Indicate whether black or the colour blocks have defects.
  4. Confirm cleaning when prompted.
  5. Wait until cleaning is complete.
  6. Print another quality check sheet.
  7. Compare the results.

Expected result: all four colour blocks should be complete and uniform.

What If a Colour Is Still Missing?

If a colour remains missing after the first cleaning, check that the cartridge is correctly installed.

  1. Perform one cleaning cycle.
  2. Print a quality check sheet.
  3. If print quality remains poor, repeat the procedure according to the printer instructions.
  4. Compare the results after each cleaning cycle.
  5. If there is no improvement after five cycles, stop cleaning and request technical assistance.

Warning: Brother recommends no more than five cleaning cycles during this troubleshooting procedure. Repeated cleaning consumes ink.

Advantage: LC75 cartridges provide approximately twice the page yield before replacement.

How to Fix Blurry or Misaligned Printing

Print Head Alignment

MENU → INK → TEST PRINT → ALIGNMENT

On touchscreen models, select Ink → Test Print → Alignment.

  1. Open the Ink menu.
  2. Select Test Print.
  3. Select Alignment.
  4. Press Black Start, Color Start or Start.
  5. The printer prints an alignment check sheet.
  6. Examine patterns A, B, C and D.
  7. For each pattern, select the number from 1 to 9 with the fewest visible vertical stripes.
  8. Confirm all four selections.
  9. Press Stop/Exit.
  10. Print another document to verify the result.

What If Cleaning Does Not Work?

  • Check the ink levels.
  • Make sure all cartridges are installed correctly.
  • Verify that the printer recognizes the cartridges.
  • Identify the affected colour.
  • Avoid repeated cleaning without improvement.
  • Never touch the print head directly.
  • Do not use alcohol or solvents on the print head.
  • If the problem persists, request technical assistance.
