Brother LC61 Ink Cartridge Cleaning and Maintenance

How to Clean the Brother LC61 Print Head

Brother printers using LC61 ink cartridges generally have an Ink button or Ink Management menu.

INK → CLEANING

Button-Controlled Printers

  1. Make sure the printer is turned on.
  2. Press the Ink button.
  3. If your printer does not have this button, press Menu, select Ink, then press OK.
  4. Use the navigation arrows to select Cleaning.
  5. Press OK.
  6. Select Black, Color or All.
  7. Press OK to confirm.
  8. The printer automatically starts cleaning.
  9. Wait until the cleaning cycle is complete.
  10. Print a quality check sheet.

Touchscreen Printers

INK ICON → CLEANING
  1. Press the Ink icon.
  2. Select Cleaning.
  3. Choose Black, Color or All.
  4. Wait until cleaning is complete.

Important: print head cleaning consumes ink. Start by cleaning only the affected colour group. Most LC61 printers allow black, all three colours or all four colours to be cleaned.

How to Print a Quality Check Sheet

INK → TEST PRINT → PRINT QUALITY

Button-Controlled Printers

  1. Press Ink.
  2. If necessary, use Menu → Ink.
  3. Select Test Print.
  4. Press OK.
  5. Select Print Quality.
  6. Press OK.
  7. Press Color Start.
  8. The printer prints a quality check sheet.

Touchscreen Printers

  1. Press the Ink icon.
  2. Select Test Print.
  3. Select Print Quality.
  4. Press Color Start.

Colour order on the sheet: Black – Yellow – Cyan – Magenta.

Each colour should display a complete block of small diagonal lines.

If Lines Are Missing

  1. Examine all four colour blocks.
  2. Check whether any lines are missing.
  3. When the printer asks whether print quality is acceptable, select No for the affected colours.
  4. When Start Cleaning? appears, select Yes.
  5. Wait until cleaning is complete.
  6. Print another quality check sheet.
  7. Compare the results before and after cleaning.

Expected result: all four colour blocks should be complete, without missing lines or white gaps.

What If a Colour Is Still Missing?

If a colour remains missing after the first cleaning, check that the cartridge is correctly installed.

Brother recommends performing additional cleaning cycles in certain situations and comparing the quality check sheets.

  1. Perform the first cleaning cycle.
  2. Print a quality check sheet.
  3. If necessary, repeat cleaning according to Brother's procedure.
  4. Compare the results after several cycles.
  5. If there is no improvement, request technical assistance.

Warning: repeated cleaning consumes ink. Avoid exceeding five cleaning cycles during troubleshooting without obtaining technical advice.

Why Is One Colour Not Printing?

A missing colour may be caused by:

  • Clogged print head nozzles.
  • An empty or nearly empty cartridge.
  • Incorrect cartridge installation.
  • A cartridge recognition problem.
  • The printer remaining unused for a long period.
  • A worn or defective print head.

A quality check sheet helps identify the affected colour.

How to Fix Blurry or Misaligned Printing

Print Head Alignment

INK → TEST PRINT → ALIGNMENT
  1. Press Ink.
  2. Select Test Print.
  3. Press OK.
  4. Select Alignment.
  5. Press OK.
  6. Press Black Start or Color Start.
  7. The printer prints an alignment check sheet.
  8. Examine the 600 dpi and 1200 dpi patterns.
  9. Compare the patterns with sample number 0.
  10. If sample number 5 most closely matches sample 0, confirm that alignment is correct.
  11. Otherwise, select the sample number that best matches sample 0 for each resolution.
  12. Press Stop/Exit.

Note: the procedure may vary slightly by model. Follow the instructions displayed on the printer.

What If Cleaning Does Not Work?

  • Check the ink levels.
  • Make sure all cartridges are installed correctly.
  • Verify that the printer recognizes the cartridges.
  • Identify the affected colour.
  • Avoid repeated cleaning without improvement.
  • Never touch the print head directly.
  • Do not use alcohol or solvents on the print head.
  • If the problem persists, request technical assistance.
