How to Clean the Brother LC404 Print Head

For Brother MFC-J1205W, MFC-J1205W XL and MFC-J1215W printers:

STOP + PAPER → COLOR COPY or MONO COPY

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Make sure the printer is turned on.
  2. Press Stop and Paper simultaneously.
  3. The Power, Warning and Ink LEDs light up briefly.
  4. The Ink LED then starts blinking.
  5. To clean all four colours, press Color Copy.
  6. To clean black only, press Mono Copy.
  7. The printer automatically starts cleaning.
  8. Wait until cleaning is complete.
  9. The printer automatically prints a quality check sheet.
  10. Examine the black, cyan, magenta and yellow blocks.

Expected result: all four colour blocks should display complete lines without white gaps.

How to Print a Quality Check Sheet

To check print quality without performing a cleaning cycle:

STOP + PAPER → PAPER
  1. Press Stop and Paper simultaneously.
  2. Wait until the Ink LED starts blinking.
  3. Press Paper once.
  4. The printer prints a quality check sheet.
  5. Examine the four colour blocks.

If lines are missing, perform a print head cleaning cycle.

Special Cleaning: Use Only When Necessary

If several normal cleaning cycles have not improved print quality, Brother provides a special cleaning procedure.

STOP + PAPER → HOLD MONO COPY + COLOR COPY FOR 5 SECONDS
  1. Press Stop and Paper simultaneously.
  2. Press and hold Mono Copy and Color Copy simultaneously for five seconds.
  3. The printer starts the special cleaning cycle.
  4. Wait until cleaning is complete.
  5. Print another quality check sheet.

Warning: special cleaning consumes a large amount of ink. Use it only when several normal cleaning cycles have failed to improve print quality.

Why Is One Colour Not Printing?

A missing colour may be caused by:

  • Clogged print head nozzles.
  • An empty or nearly empty cartridge.
  • Incorrect cartridge installation.
  • A cartridge recognition problem.
  • The printer remaining unused for an extended period.

Start by printing a quality check sheet to identify the affected colour.

How to Fix Blurry or Misaligned Printing

Print Head Alignment

Procedure:

  1. Turn off the printer using its Power button.
  2. Press and hold Mono Copy.
  3. While holding the button, turn on the printer.
  4. Continue holding Mono Copy until the alignment check sheet is printed.
  5. When the Power LED blinks slowly, place the check sheet on the scanner glass.
  6. Position the mark on the sheet in the lower-right corner of the scanner glass.
  7. Press Mono Copy or Color Copy.
  8. The printer scans the sheet and automatically adjusts the alignment.

Result: three quick flashes of the Power LED indicate successful adjustment.

If the Warning and Ink LEDs flash quickly three times, repeat the alignment procedure.

What If Cleaning Does Not Work?

  • Check the ink levels.
  • Make sure all cartridges are installed correctly.
  • Verify that the printer recognizes the cartridges.
  • Identify the affected colour.
  • Avoid repeated cleaning without improvement.
  • Never touch the print head directly.
  • Do not use alcohol or solvents on the print head.
  • If the problem persists, request technical assistance.
