Brother LC205 and LC207 Print Head Cleaning
Is your Brother printer producing missing colours, white lines or faded prints? Cleaning the print head may help restore print quality. This guide covers Brother LC205C, LC205M, LC205Y and LC207BK cartridges, as well as compatible printers using LC209BK.
Quick Cleaning Procedure – Brother LC205 / LC207
On the printer touchscreen:
INK → IMPROVE PRINT QUALITY → CHECK PRINT QUALITY
Alternative menu path:
SETTINGS → MAINTENANCE → IMPROVE PRINT QUALITY → CHECK PRINT QUALITY
- Press Ink or open the maintenance settings.
- Select Improve Print Quality.
- Choose Check Print Quality.
- Press Start to print the quality check sheet.
- Examine the black, cyan, magenta and yellow blocks.
- If lines are missing, indicate the problem on the touchscreen.
- For each colour, select the numbered pattern from 1 to 4 that most closely matches your printout.
- When cleaning is recommended, press Start.
- After cleaning, print another quality check sheet.
Expected result: all four colour blocks should contain complete, consistent lines.
Important: Print head cleaning consumes ink. For this procedure, Brother recommends no more than five cleaning cycles. Excessive cleaning wastes ink and may not resolve the problem.
Why Is One Colour Not Printing?
If black, cyan, magenta or yellow is missing, the print head nozzles may be partially clogged. An empty, incorrectly installed or defective cartridge may also cause poor print quality.
Before replacing a cartridge, print a quality check sheet to identify the affected colour.
LC205, LC207 and LC209: What Is the Difference?
- LC205C: cyan, approximately 1,200 pages.
- LC205M: magenta, approximately 1,200 pages.
- LC205Y: yellow, approximately 1,200 pages.
- LC207BK: black, approximately 1,200 pages.
- LC209BK: black, approximately 2,400 pages, for selected compatible models.

How to Fix Blurry or Misaligned Printing
If text appears blurry or vertical lines are misaligned, the printer may require print alignment rather than head cleaning.
Alignment menu:
INK → IMPROVE PRINT QUALITY → ALIGNMENT
Or:
SETTINGS → MAINTENANCE → IMPROVE PRINT QUALITY → ALIGNMENT
INK → IMPROVE PRINT QUALITY → ALIGNMENT
Or:
SETTINGS → MAINTENANCE → IMPROVE PRINT QUALITY → ALIGNMENT
- Select the requested paper size.
- Choose Basic or Advanced alignment.
- Print the alignment check sheet.
- For each pattern, select the number with the fewest visible vertical stripes.
- Complete the instructions displayed on the touchscreen.
What If Cleaning Does Not Work?
- Make sure all ink cartridges are installed correctly.
- Check the ink levels displayed by the printer.
- Determine whether one or several colours are affected.
- Avoid repeated cleaning when print quality does not improve.
- Never touch the print head directly.
- Do not apply solvents or cleaning products to the print head.
Tips to Help Prevent Print Quality Problems
- Print a few black and colour pages regularly.
- Avoid leaving the printer unused for extended periods.
- Turn off the printer using its Power button.
- Normally leave the printer plugged in so automatic maintenance can operate.
- Keep replacement cartridges sealed until needed.
- Clean the print head only when print quality requires it.
