How to Clean the Brother LC401 Print Head

Brother MFC-J1010DW and MFC-J1012DW:

INK → IMPR. PRINTQUALITY → IMPR. PRINTQUALITY

Use the navigation arrows and OK button.

Brother MFC-J1170DW:

INK → IMPROVE PRINT QUALITY → CHECK PRINT QUALITY

Brother MFC-J1800DW:

On the touchscreen, open the Ink menu and locate the print quality check option.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open the menu corresponding to your printer model.
  2. Print the Print Quality Check Sheet.
  3. Examine the black, cyan, magenta and yellow blocks.
  4. If all lines are complete, select No.
  5. If lines are missing, select Yes.
  6. For each colour, select the numbered pattern from 1 to 4 that best matches the printed result.
  7. If cleaning is recommended, confirm to start the cleaning procedure.
  8. Wait until cleaning is complete.
  9. Print another quality check sheet when prompted.

Expected result: all four colour blocks should display complete lines without white gaps.

Manual Print Head Cleaning

MFC-J1010DW and MFC-J1012DW:

INK → PRINT HEAD CLEANING

Use the navigation arrows and OK button.

MFC-J1170DW:

INK → PRINT HEAD CLEANING

For the MFC-J1800DW, use the print head cleaning function in the maintenance menu.

  1. Select Black only, Color only or All.
  2. Choose Normal, Strong or Strongest, if available.
  3. Start with Normal.
  4. Start the cleaning cycle.
  5. Wait until cleaning is complete.
  6. Print another quality check sheet.

Tip: use stronger cleaning only when normal cleaning does not provide satisfactory results.

Important:

Print head cleaning consumes ink. Avoid repeated cleaning cycles without improvement.

How to Fix Blurry or Misaligned Printing

Print Head Alignment

MFC-J1010DW and MFC-J1012DW:

MFC-J1170DW:

INK → IMPROVE PRINT QUALITY → ALIGNMENT

For the MFC-J1800DW, locate the alignment function in the maintenance menu.

  4. Print the alignment check sheet.
  5. Follow the instructions displayed on the printer.
