How to Clean the Brother LC506 Print Head

The cleaning procedure depends on your Brother printer model.

Brother MFC-J4355DW – Button-Controlled Printer

INK → PRINT HEAD CLEANING
  1. Press the Ink button.
  2. Use the navigation arrows to select Print Head Cleaning.
  3. Press OK.
  4. Select Black only, Color only or All.
  5. Press OK.
  6. Choose Normal, Strong or Strongest.
  7. Press OK.
  8. Press the Start button indicated by the printer.
  9. Wait until cleaning is complete.

Brother MFC-J4555DW – Touchscreen Printer

INK → PRINT HEAD CLEANING
  1. Press Ink on the touchscreen.
  2. Select Print Head Cleaning.
  3. Choose Black only, Color only or All.
  4. Select Normal, Strong or Strongest.
  5. Always start with Normal.
  6. Press Start.
  7. Wait until cleaning is complete.

Important: LC506, LC506XL and LC506XXL cartridges use the same cleaning procedures.

How to Print a Quality Check Sheet

Brother MFC-J4355DW:

INK → IMPR. PRINTQUALITY → IMPR. PRINTQUALITY

Use the navigation arrows and OK button.

Brother MFC-J4555DW:

INK → IMPROVE PRINT QUALITY → CHECK PRINT QUALITY
  1. Open the appropriate menu for your printer.
  2. Start printing the Print Quality Check Sheet.
  3. Examine the black, cyan, magenta and yellow blocks.
  4. Check whether any lines are missing.
  5. If all lines are complete, no additional cleaning is required.
  6. If lines are missing, select the option indicating poor print quality.
  7. Follow the printer instructions to identify the defective patterns.
  8. Confirm cleaning when prompted.
  9. Print another quality check sheet after cleaning.

Expected result: all four colour blocks should display complete lines without white gaps.

Special Cleaning: Use Only When Necessary

If several normal cleaning cycles have not improved print quality, Brother provides a special cleaning procedure.

Brother MFC-J4355DW:

  1. Press Ink.
  2. Select Print Head Cleaning.
  3. Press OK.
  4. Press Settings and OK simultaneously.
  5. The special cleaning cycle starts automatically.

Brother MFC-J4555DW:

  1. Open Ink → Print Head Cleaning.
  2. Press and hold the icon indicated for special cleaning on the touchscreen for five seconds.
  3. Wait until cleaning is complete.

Warning: special cleaning consumes a large amount of ink. Use it only when several normal cleaning cycles have failed to improve print quality.

  1. Complete a print quality check first.
  2. Open the Alignment menu.

  4. Select the required paper size.

  6. Print the alignment check sheet.
