How to Clean the Brother LC51 Print Head
Brother printers using LC51 ink cartridges generally have an Ink or Ink Management button.

Step-by-Step Instructions
- Make sure the printer is turned on.
- Press the Ink / Ink Management button.
- Use the navigation arrows to select Cleaning.
- Press OK.
- Select the cleaning option: Black, Color or All, depending on the printer model.
- Press OK to confirm.
- The printer automatically starts cleaning.
- Wait until the cleaning cycle is complete.
- Print a quality check sheet.
Alternative menu path: Menu → Ink Management → Cleaning.
Important: available cleaning options vary by model. Some printers allow individual colour cleaning, while others offer only black or all-colour cleaning.
How to Print a Quality Check Sheet
INK → TEST PRINT → PRINT QUALITY
- Press Ink / Ink Management.
- Select Test Print.
- Press OK.
- Select Print Quality.
- Press OK.
- Press Color Start.
- The printer prints a quality check sheet.
- Examine the four colour blocks.
Colour order on the sheet: Black – Yellow – Cyan – Magenta.
Each colour block should display complete diagonal lines without white gaps.
If Lines Are Missing
- When the printer asks whether black print quality is acceptable, answer according to the printed result.
- Repeat the check for the colour blocks.
- If print quality is poor, select No.
- When Start Cleaning? appears, select Yes.
- Wait until cleaning is complete.
- Press Color Start to print another quality check sheet.
How Many Cleaning Cycles Should You Perform?
Print head cleaning consumes ink. Start with one cleaning cycle, then print another quality check sheet.
If print quality gradually improves, another cleaning cycle may help.
Warning: Brother recommends avoiding unnecessary cleaning. If there is no improvement after several attempts, and up to five cycles under its troubleshooting procedure, request technical assistance.

Why Is One Colour Not Printing?
A missing colour may be caused by:
- Clogged print head nozzles.
- An empty or nearly empty cartridge.
- Incorrect cartridge installation.
- A cartridge recognition problem.
- The printer remaining unused for a long period.
- A worn or defective print head.
Start by printing a quality check sheet to identify the affected colour.
How to Fix Blurry or Misaligned Printing
Print Head Alignment
INK → TEST PRINT → ALIGNMENT
- Press Ink / Ink Management.
- Select Test Print.
- Press OK.
- Select Alignment.
- Press OK.
- Press Black Start or Color Start.
- The printer prints an alignment check sheet.
- Examine the 600 dpi and 1200 dpi patterns.
- Compare the patterns with sample number 0.
- If sample number 5 most closely matches sample 0, confirm that alignment is correct.
- Otherwise, select the sample number that best matches sample 0 for each resolution.
- Press Stop/Exit.
Expected result: text and lines should appear sharper and properly aligned.
What If Cleaning Does Not Work?
- Check the ink levels.
- Make sure all cartridges are installed correctly.
- Verify that the printer recognizes the cartridges.
- Identify the affected colour.
- Avoid repeated cleaning without improvement.
- Never touch the print head directly.
- Do not use alcohol or solvents on the print head.
- If the problem persists, request technical assistance.
